Galena Cellars
Vineyard & Winery
In the early 1970s Bob and Joyce Lawlor decided to take winemaking classes. Their vision was to start their own family-run winery in the Midwest. They recruited daughter Christine and she pursued a degree in enology and viticulture. In 1976, they opened Christina Wine Cellars in McGregor, Iowa; two years later a second winery in LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and in 1983 came a chance to open a third in Galena, Illinois.
Soon they called upon their son Scott to move to the area and help. Scott and Christine, along with their parents, set to work restoring an 1840s granary building on Galena’s Main Street. The winery opened in 1985 with production of about 5,000 gallons of wine. By 1990, the family decided to concentrate on the Galena location and closed the other two.
As wine production grew, they acquired a farm on Ford Road just outside of town so they could grow experimental grapes and move the wine production there.
Today Galena Cellars is the 2nd largest winery in Illinois—pressing, fermenting and aging fruit and table wines. Production has surpassed 50,000 gallons and 35 varieties of wine. Galena Cellars consistently wins awards at regional, national and international competitions.
