Arbor Hill Vineyards, Inc.
After attending an alternative small farming seminar, Robert and Carol Hall decided to transform a few acres of their families’ land into a vineyard. The Halls decided to plant Marechal Foch and Frontenac grapes, two varieties proven hardy enough to withstand cold Minnesota winters. Their reason for choosing the varieties was simple, “if it can grow there; it can grow here.”
They were one of the first vineyards in Illinois to plant any quantity of Frontenac grapes. Their choice has proven to be a good one. When grown to the north or south, the grape is average, but grown in the soils of Jo Daviess County – it’s outstanding.
Through trial and error, the Halls have learned to nurture the soil and care for the vines. In 2006, just four years after their first harvest, Arbor Hill was honored as Vineyard of the Year by the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association.
